WIT - Graduate Business Careers Symposium

Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) held a Graduate Careers day in March 2011 featuring several nationally and internationally recognised guest speakers who shared their expertise and experience on a broad range of professional development topics including:

  • Entrepreneurship: Starting your own BusinessWatford Institute of Technology Guest Speakers
  • Career Management, presented by Karen Gray, Director, CareerVision
  • Social Media, Online Reputation & Video Interviewing
  • Global Talent Management
  • Perspectives on Graduate Recruitment & Management Programmes

The panel of experts facilitated discussions around current career development challenges and opportunities in today’s challenging business environment.

One of the key points arising from the discussions was that good Career Management should be about regular learning, building good relationships and seeking out/taking opportunities. It also became clear that this should be assisted through professional support from a qualified career consultant wherever possible.

Career Resilience has previously been described as "the ability to adapt to changing work circumstances” or "the result or outcome of being career self-reliant" - Collard et al. (1996). Career Resilience can be achieved through a combination of knowledge, planning and personality – in addition professional help can be invaluable. Career Management can be tough and often it feels like “you can’t see the wood for the trees”. Professional help from a Career Counsellor or a Career Management Programme can help you focus on, and reinvigorate, your career goals.

It’s a tough market out there, but you can learn to develop your self-marketing approaches to successfully bag a job – professional and networking support is key!

Noel Murray from WIT thanked Karen Gray, Director of CareerVision – “Thanks so much for all your help with the event yesterday. I have been inundated with emails today from people who were at the event. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed it and the message coming back is that there was a real "positive vibe" throughout the event. Students greatly benefited from the day as all of the speakers were excellent in their delivery.”
