Studying whilst maintaining employability
I am currently working in a job which is at a lower level to my skills and ability level, it is in fact not in my area of specialism. As a result I've decided to do something new and fresh. My main question is, how can I make myself attractive to employers to move in to a new area whilst studying part time? I have to work for financial commitments so I took the current role but I am unhappy with being in this position.
My main question would be "what are you studying for", or "what would you want to be studying"? You sound like you have a clear direction in mind.
The best advice would be to try to get a job that is directly in, or related to, the type of role/organisation/sector you'd like to aspire to when you've completed your study and are 'qualified'. Then you can perceive it as 'training on the job' and any lower salary will be accepted on the basis of learning accruing to you as value. It will also look very good on your CV and you can learn from mentors as you go, so that going into the interview when you're qualified will be much easier. It will also be relatively easy to talk yourself into a role in which you're studying as the developmental path is easy for the employer to see, and they will recognize the potential value they could take on in their organisation, if they hire you.
