Primary School Teaching Jobs

I currently have a successful, professional career spanning over 10 years. However, I am considering changing my career. Primary school teaching is some-thing that I have always wanted to do. I have all of the qualifications required to enter into the Hibernia course (pending successful interview). However I see this career change as a huge risk. I can work for some time while completing the Hibernia course, as it is advertised as a part time course. But do feel that I will have to give up work before the end of the course as a lot of time is requried for teaching practise, gaeltacht etc. I am unsure of the current job availability for primary school teachers.

Is there currently a severe shortage of jobs, as frequently reported?

There is a shortage of primary school teachers, but the class size may increase next year, so this may turn around in the short term. But longer term, teachers are in demand. The age profile is getting older and those retiring will just not be replaced for a few years. They are always looking for good teachers to come in and make a difference to school dynamics/performance.

All you need is one job, for you, and this usually comes about through good contacts and good performance on your teaching placements during your course, rather than adverts etc. You can also get work supply teaching, filling in for leave, or on short contracts. This is also quite lucrative. If you’ve always wanted to do it, and you can get into Hibernia, then go for it – as you really want it, you’ll make it happen. Your passion will also help you be good at it – something everyone wants. You can also work right up to the June before you start in any role, and the summer off will let you have time for prep work.
