Is it acceptable to do a preliminary interview over the phone?
I'm applying for some jobs abroad but I'm worried that if I get called for interviews it is going to be a bit of a struggle to afford flights. I've been to so many here only to face rejection. I can spring for a bus fare, but plane tickets are a whole other level! Would it ruin my chances or annoy a potential boss if I asked could we at least do a preliminary interview over the phone?
Most first interviews are fine over the phone and employers are usually OK to meet people this way initially, so no problem to ask this. This is especially the case if the role is going through a recruiter, as they are used to phone interview first contacts too.
However, if you’re applying for roles overseas, it’s always best to have a local address. If you don’t, it means that the employer sees you as a potential hassle to employ – moving problems, not used to locality/country, language issues potentially, etc etc. So if you can manage to use someone else’s address, eg friend or family member who is living around the area you’re applying in, get their address on your CV (after asking their permission!). This way you’ll get far more invites for interview.
It may also be worth considering a trip to your overseas work destination for a week or two, focusing only on role applications, for which you can secure interviews in advance – worth a thought.
