How to Negotiate a Pay Rise

I really feel like I’m well overdue a raise. I know that’s optimistic these days, but it’s long overdue and our company is actually doing quite well. Any tips on approaching my boss?

If you feel you’re overdue for a raise, you must be clearly seeing that you’re adding more value to the company than you’re getting back in monetary terms. Try to articulate that value – what is it that you’re doing so well for the organisation?

You’ll need to bullet point down these elements and provide clear examples for each one to prove the point. Try to be as numerate as possible, e.g. how much % market share you’ve developed, extra income you’ve gained, increases in customer satisfaction scores etc. Then make an appointment with your boss to discuss these achievements, and because you’re tying them down in numbers, it will be easier to ask the question ‘Do you think I may be worth more to this organisation in terms of salary?’. Whatever he/she answers, you can then go on to state why you think you are worth more, and your pitch on how much more!

In these times, it’s not really possible to go for more than 10%, but your figure and your analysis of why should be backed up by your summary of your work performance elements. If your boss says no, and you can’t think of other ways in which the company adds value to your life, e.g. flexible hours, good holidays, etc, then maybe it’s time to move on. There are good jobs out there, and you’re in a good position – just make sure all your excellent bullet-pointed work elements go onto your CV in good style! They will help you move on, so are well worth articulating whatever the outcome.

Good luck.
