How can I maximise on a temporary managerial secondment?

I've been working in retail for a couple of years and was recently sent abroad for a few months to one of the company's other branches where I got to work as a store manager for a launch. Now I'm home and back to supervisor level, there don't seem to be many jobs going. What is the best way to update my CV to show I have worked at managerial level and where should I go from here?

You can include your job overseas with your employer as a secondment.

Insert the job title, the employer (overseas branch name) and the dates you were there. Then include a description of your role as a store manager (short) and list a few of your achievements in the job, e.g. merchandising display planning, creation of shop floor training programme, staff problems sorted out etc, etc. Lastly insert what you learnt from the experience, e.g. language, managerial skills etc.

Make sure you also position yourself as a manager in your CV profile and indicate what type of retail you’d like to be managing within, by way of career direction. Also make sure you’re up on Linked-In so that prospective employers can find you.

You’ve had a great opportunity overseas, so you should make best use of it in your CV and interviews to secure a managers role here – they are about, and you only need 1!
