Do you have any networking tips?
I'm a trained makeup artist but I'm finding it really hard to get a job. Do you have any networking tips?
Good networking is all about making and proactively managing contacts. It’s also about giving and receiving career-related information and assistance.
First of all you need to draw out your own existing network map – compile it in sections, school, college, friends, family, clubs, societies, interest gps – who do you know in each area? Write in their names. Don’t forget friends of family and family of friends. Next, circle those people you would feel happy talking to and who you could contact right now. Then decide what you are going to say to them.
If you are looking for make up artistry contacts, then you’ll need to say, “I’d really love to be getting some connections within the make-up artistry area, as having completed my training, I’m now keen to move towards work in that field – would you know anyone who is connected to this work?”. They may, or they may not, but what you’re looking for them to do is give you a name of someone else who may know more, i.e. moving you closer. Don’t forget to ask your contact if there’s any help they’d like from you, so you can return the favour – maybe a contact or a piece of information you could find for them.
If you then follow up well with the contacts you receive, you’ll find yourself in make-up work in no time.
Good Luck.
